Towpath washout near Brunswick

May 23, 2018

Last week’s rain washed out the bridge over Culvert 82 creating a breach in the C&O Canal towpath.

The washout is located about halfway between the access points at Brunswick (milepoint 55.0) and Lander (50.9). The park will establish a detour when conditions improve and the park can SAFELY evaluate the area.Looking at the map, any detour will be circuitous.

Little Catoctin Creek flowed through Culvert 82, which was in poor condition before last week’s rain. The photos below were taken by Level Walker Doug Zveare in 2014. You can see more at his photo page.

The rain and associated flooding affected other areas of the park. The park’s Facebook page, https://www.facebook.com/chesapeakeandohiocanal/, is the best place to check current conditions.
