Karen Gray Is Volunteer of the Year

The Chesapeake & Ohio Canal National Historical Park has named Karen Gray its 2008 Volunteer of the Year. The award recognizes her valuable historical work on behalf of the canal park.

Dr. Gray was instrumental in the recent publication of an informative site bulletin of the granaries at Whites Ferry and Monocacy Village. She worked tirelessly with a team of other volunteers to edit and republish an important work, Historic Resource Study of the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal by National Park Service historian Harlan Unrau. Other contributions by Dr. Gray have included the conversion of park reports into a suitable format for online publication, organization of historical photographs, and assisting the library at park headquarters in numerous additional projects.

We congratulate Dr. Gray, who is a longtime member of the C&O Canal Association and a frequent contributor to the Association’s newsletter. Below, she is seen receiving the award from C&OCNHP Superintendent Kevin Brandt in September.
