C&O Canal Association members were saddened to learn of the death of Dr. Carl A. Linden, one of our association's most outstanding and beloved leaders. Carl was the editor of the association's quarterly newsletter, Along The Towpath. He was re-elected to another three-year term on the board of directors at the annual meeting in March. Carl served as president of the association three times, from 1972 to 1974, from 1994 to 1996, and again in 2007.

The Linden family reported that Carl passed away on the night of April 2. He underwent surgery March 26 to repair an aneurysm and had returned home following six days in the hospital.

There will be a viewing at the Joseph Gawler's Sons funeral home on Saturday April 7th from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The address is 5130 Wisconsin Avenue, NW 20016. Phone: 202-966-6400. The funeral home has a website, www.mem.com, that will have more information, photos, and a place to write a tribute.

A Mass will be held at Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church on Monday April 9 at 11:30 a.m. with a reception to follow. The address is 4835 MacArthur Blvd, Washington, DC 20007. Phone: 202-337-4835

In lieu of flowers, the family has suggested that donations may be made to the C&O Canal Association. Donations made payable to "C&O Canal Association" will normally be placed in the Kenneth Rollins C&O Canal Fund that supports projects and programs for the C&O Canal National Historical Park. Ken and Carl were lifelong adventurers and friends.

Carl was Professor Emeritus of Political Science and International Affairs at George Washington University.

The June issue of Along The Towpath will celebrate Carl's life and many services to the canal park.
