C&O Canal National Historical Park is inviting public comments on its plan to restore canal operations at Williamsport, MD.
Park officials have published a 138-page Environment Assessment document describing their plans for Williamsport. Project components include:
- restoration of the canal prism and towpath
- repair of Lock 44
- Lockhouse 44 interpretive exhibits
- restoration of the historic railroad lift bridge
- introduction of canal boat operations
- historic preservation of the Cushwa Warehouse
- development of a new visitor center at the Cushwa Basin's Trolley Barn
- restoration of the Conococheague Aqueduct

The park will hold a public meeting June 28, 2011 from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM at the Williamsport Community Building in Byron Memorial Park. The park will accept written comments beginning June 13, 2011 through July 15, 2011. Written comments should be submitted through the park website or via postal letter.
